Lolo Jones: A Christian Virgin and Proud of It

Olympian Lolo Jones is a true role model for young girls, but has been severely ridiculed for her stance.  Mary Carillo, in fact, disappoints in the video because she can't seem to grasp why Jones feels the way she does about saving herself for marriage.  That's unfortunate, because there are a  lot more people who scoff at what Jones is doing than applaud her for it, and Carillo's laughing during the interview feeds into the belief of the scoffers.

A devout Christian, Jones has previously discussed the central role religion plays in her life from reading the Bible before a race to listening to Christian music. That faith has helped her persevere through a trying childhood in Des Moines, Iowa. Jones’ family was so poor that she had to shoplift frozen dinners.

Catholicism: The Last Acceptable Prejudice

In our overly politically correct world, there is still one thing about which you can say any disparaging thing that comes to mind without concern for censure of any kind: the Catholic Church.

Randall Smith, who blogs at The Catholic Thing, wrote a recent piece entitled "Freedom from Catholicism," in which he makes the case for the pervasive prejudice manifested so often both publicly and privately in society.

...anti-Catholicism is one of the last acceptable prejudices in the country. Things people would never dream of saying about other groups, they’ll say without reserve about Catholics. And a degree of ignorance that would be downright embarrassing in other contexts – on the level of: “But don’t all black people eat watermelon?” — will cause no public embarrassment whatsoever when the ignorant comment is about Catholics and Catholicism.

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin delivered the following remarks to the Hamilton Society on June 2, 2011.



Our fiscal policy and our foreign policy are on a collision course; and if we fail to put our budget on a sustainable path, then we are choosing decline as a world power.



If we continue down our current path, then a debt-fueled economic crisis is not a probability. It is a mathematical certainty. Some hear these facts and conclude that the sun is setting on America... that our problems are bigger than we are... that our competitors will soon outrun us... and that the choice we face is over how, not whether, to manage our nation's decline. It's inevitable, they seem to say, so let's just get on with it... Our fiscal problems are real, and the need to address them is urgent. But I'm here to tell you that decline is not a certainty for America. Rather, as Charles Krauthammer put it, "decline is a choice."



A world without U.S. leadership will be a more chaotic place, a place where we have less influence, and a place where our citizens face more dangers and fewer opportunities. Choosing decline would have consequences that I doubt many Americans would be comfortable with. So we must lead. ...a central element of maintaining American leadership is the promotion of our moral principles -- consistently and energetically -- without being unrealistic about what is possible for us to achieve.



A safer world and a more prosperous America go hand-in-hand. Economic growth is the key to avoiding the kind of painful austerity that would limit our ability to generate both hard and soft power. A more prosperous economy enables us to afford a modernized military that is properly sized for the breadth of the challenges we face.



Today, some in this country relish the idea of America's retreat from our role in the world. They say that it's about time for other nations to take over; that we should turn inward; that we should reduce ourselves to membership on a long list of mediocre has-beens... Instead of heeding these calls to surrender, we must renew our commitment to the idea that America is the greatest force for human freedom the world has ever seen; a country whose devotion to free enterprise has lifted more people out of poverty than any economic system ever designed; and a nation whose best days still lie ahead of us, if we make the necessary choices today.

Missy Franklin Talks About God

Olympic Champion Missy Franklin was interviewed by Chad Bonham for Beliefnet.com, and you can read the whole interview HERE.

Excerpts about her strong faith, which she discovered during her first visit to her high school, Regis Jesuit, are reproduced below:

Bonham: Can you tell me about your faith journey?

Franklin: Religion was not important in my parents’ upbringing. Therefore I never had a church home. We occasionally attended a church service but I felt so uncomfortable and self-conscious as I didn’t know what was expected. Before my freshman year I visited Regis Jesuit High School. As I walked in the main door, I felt at peace and knew I belonged there. From that first moment, I knew God was with me. Every day over the last three years, my faith has grown. One of my favorite times is going to our beautiful school chapel and spending time with God. This year, I attended Kairos with my Regis Jesuit sisters and it changed my life forever. I now really work on keeping my faith strong.

Bonham: How has your faith in God specifically helped you deal with the challenges you’ve faced as an Olympic hopeful?

Franklin: God is always there for me. I talk with Him before, during and after practice and competitions. I pray to Him for guidance. I thank Him for this talent He has given me and promise to be a positive role model for young athletes in all sports.

Bonham: What are your expectations for what God might be doing collectively through the church at the Olympics?

Franklin: Once every four years, athletes, families, friends and fans come together from all over the world. I know God will be there and I hope many of the people there will also feel His presence. He will offer us the opportunity to appreciate and love our similarities and differences. It will be up to each of us to take away as little or as much as we want from London.

Vic Stacy, the resident of Peach House RV Park who came to the aid of Early Police Sgt. Steven Means Sunday after two people were killed by Charles Ronald Conner, insists he's not a hero — he just did what had to be done. Stacy told the Brownwood Bulletin when he saw that the police officer couldn't get a good shot at the gunman, "I jumped in there, put that first shot in him, and knocked him down." Here are portions of the interview.

Brown County Sheriff Bobby Grubbs conducts a press conference at the scene of the shootings that resulted in three deaths north of Brownwood on U.S. Highway 183 Sunday afternoon.

If guns were outlawed, that officer might be dead, because the perpetrator who had no qualms about killing two innocent people would have had no qualms about violating gun laws; the law abiding good guy, on the other hand, probably would not have had the gun that saved the officer.

It's Chick-fil-A Day!

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister, declared today 

national "Chick-fil-A Day."

As you probably already know, Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy, when interviewed recently, pleaded "guilty as charged" for backing "the biblical definition of a family."  Cathy has been vilified by the usual suspects representing the sodomite lobby, as well as a number of pandering politicians, for daring to state his support for traditional marriage.  Please support him, if you believe in traditional marriage, by patronizing one of his restaurants today, and by sharing this post with friends.
