Al Alberts & The Four Aces, R.I.P.

(Al is the one at the bottom of the group.)

The world of popular music lost one of its brightest stars last week. Al Alberts, lead singer of the Four Aces, died at the age of 87. He was a South Philadelphia icon throughout the 50s and 60s, and the unique sound of the Four Aces could be heard on virtually every car radio making the Friday night trip from Philadelphia to the Jersey Shore. A South Philadelphia native, Alberts served in the Navy in World War II, then attended Temple University, where he earned a degree in finance. He married his wife Stella in 1953, and she was at his bedside when he died, 56 years later, on November 27, 2009.

Two of the songs recorded by the Four Aces for movies by the same name: Three Coins in the Fountain and Love is a Many Splendored Thing, won Academy Awards. One of their most memorable hits, On the Way to Cape May, is not available, but here are some of the other top hits recorded by the group. Enjoy!

We just don't make them like that anymore.
