Chairman Mullen JCOS on Don't Ask; Don't Tell
Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on Tuesday said allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military is "the right thing to do." His position differs from that of Elaine Donnelley (see prior post), and is somewhat surprising considering the outcry from retired Generals and Admirals on this controversial issue. Donnelly, I think, states the case best when she says:
"Apparently the president has not read the law itself, which states, 'There is no constitutional right to serve in the military.' Many groups of people who are patriotic are not eligible to serve in uniform, but everyone can serve our country in some way."
