A School Superintendent with Guts

That's Frances Gallo, Superintendent of Schools for Central Falls, Rhode Island, pop. 19,000. She is possibly the only school superintendent in the nation who refuses to bow to a teachers union. We can only hope that this will start a new era in collective bargaining for teachers, whose unions traditionally care not a whit how unsuccessful their members are in the classroom, or how little learning is actually going on in the classrooms. It's all about benefits and more pay for less work for teachers - some of whom have no real interest in educating the children placed in their care.

John Derbyshire wrote about this brave lady in a post on The Corner on National Review Online today.

The Sweetness and Light Blog is also following this bold step by Superintendent Gallo. Let's hope that the more attention the story gets, the more other school superintendents will develop some spine and convince teachers unions that teachers first have to show results before they can even think about dictating the terms of their employment.

God bless this courageous lady. May her actions be emulated by school boards across the country.
