Don't Like the Numbers? Change 'Em

For some time now, I've been wanting to write something about the greatest problem, in my view, with the political process: Politicians lie! They lie to make themselves seem better than they are; they lie to make their policies seem better than they are; and they lie to make their political opponents, and their policies, seem worse then they are. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could believe every statement made by every politician? That, of course, will never happen, but we still have the ability to renounce (at the polling place) every politician who lies to us, especially those who do so while displaying a condescending attitude, obviously believing that we are too stupid to discern their lies.

In today's Wall Street Journal, Michael J. Boskin, professor of economics at Stanford University and a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, rescued me from what would have been a feeble attempt when he discussed the above problem with politicians in this article.
