Day 1

Up at 6:00, breakfast across the street (but there is a tunnel under the street, so you don't have to go outside) was a hot buffet. Skipped the hot stuff and had yogurt, cereal, fruit, toast, coffee and tea. Headed for the Iditarod Headquarters (Millennium Hotel - just across the road) where I'll register as a volunteer and pick up my stuff. I'll take Mom's camera and try to get some good shots of the area.
Headline on the Anchorage Daily News Sports Page today: Iditarod Bloodlines. The story featured three families (Reddingtons, Mackeys, and Seaveys). The Reddingtons have 37 finishes (37,000 miles) and No championships. The Mackeys have 36 finishes (36,000 miles) and four championships. The Seaveys have 23 finishes (23,000 miles) and one championship. Lance Mackey won the "Last Great Race" the past two years, and is probably favored to make it three in a row. I think everybody at this hotel is here for the race. You can already feel the excitement in the air (it's also 10 degrees).
