Off and Sledding II





The bus ride from Anchorage to Willow took a little more than two hours, and, as they say, Alaska is about a half hour from Anchorage.  It was beautiful all the way, until you found yourself staring at the Home Depot in Wasilla.  With about four hours to go before the official start (restart) of the race, I spent some of the time helping erect the orange fencing you see in one of the above photos.  In the photo looking away from the starting line, you can see a hill in the distance.  My Trail Guard position (#1) for the restart was a little bit past the top of that hill.  I also posted a photo of one of the more onerous looking snow machines (amply described in the previous post).  That's a Polaris, which I'm told is the best and, of course, the most expensive - about $15,000 and up.  The other photos are of the start area about two to three hours before the first team entered the gate.  More to come...
